Every family struggles to find ways to engage the younger generation in the process of learning about family values, goals, assets and history. Although every family is different, here are some best practices we've developed over years of working with families across the country.
Best Practices:
- Be Deliberate. The same diligent approach used to train business leaders to take over when the CEO is retiring, should be applied to the next generation of family members. By having a systematic approach to learning that includes opportunities for each member of the family, you make learning a conscious process, and not a one time event. - Go Deeper. On your next family vacation, set aside some time for getting to know yourself, and each other by doing a family assessment report. It's a great way to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for family members and to develop better communication channels. The assessment will help you recognize your strengths, and identify areas that may need attention moving forward.
- Adapt to different learning styles. Everyone has a different learning style, so try to provide opportunities to learn in different ways (classroom, hands on/experiential learning, field trips), In some cases you can get your values across by telling stories about how family wealth was created, in other cases it may be more important to volunteer for a cause together, or to allow a younger family member to present a cause they want to support. Use different approaches to make sure your message and values resonate with the entire family.
- Don't forget the fun. Make time to have fun with your family with activities that bond you together. You can try a scavenger hunt, a game night, a murder mystery, or an escape room to bring everyone together for an exciting challenge.
- Get Feedback. Make sure to check in with each family member at regular intervals to learn about their milestones, challenges, and thoughts on how the family activities and learning is going. Make sure you acknowledge the feedback, even if you don't act on ever suggestion.
